National Museum of Colombo

National Museum of Colombo is the largest museum in Colombo. It is known for its extensive collection that relates to the Sri Lankan past, both historically and culturally. Of special note here is a thousand year old stone-cut statue of Lord Buddha, a copy of statue of Tara (female Buddha), ancient palm leaves inscriptions in Pali language and the crown and throne of last king of Kandy. Also of note here is the skeleton of a Sri Lankan elephant that had seven feet long tusks that carried ‘the Relic of the tooth of the Buddha’ casket for 11 years.

Colombo Dutch Museum

The Colombo Dutch Museum in Colombo is a Dutch town house that has now been turned into a museum to reflect the salient features of Dutch architecture as it was during the Colonial Rule (1656-1796). On its inside is a neat array of old furniture, ceramics, coins and weaponry; and its outside is hallmarked by a beautiful garden.

Viharamahadevi Park

The Viharamahadevi Park is the oldest and largest park in Colombo. It is named after Queen Viharamahadevi and is famous for a large gold-colored statue of Lord Buddha that sits majestically near a series of water fountains. This park also has a mini zoo and a play area, and its outer perimeter is flanked by the Cenotaph War Memorial and the Colombo Public Library.
