Hilo is the largest and oldest town in the Hawaiian Archipelago. This scenic little place is situated alongside Hilo Bay and sits nicely atop two ice-capped volcanic hills, one of which is still active. Hilo is famous for its botanical gardens, clear water beaches, delectable seafood, ice-creams, misty rainfalls and the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo, which is the only American zoo in a tropical forest.

Lili?uokalani Park and Gardens is a scenic park with early 20th century Edo-Japanese gardens in Hilo. These gardens contain koi ponds, statues, pagodas and a Japanese teahouse besides an exceptionally brilliant setup of the rock-water paths. It is connected via a footbridge to a beautiful small island called Moku Ola (the Island of Life). Once the site of an ancient temple dedicated to healing, this island is now a good place for picnicking and swimming.

The hundred years old Hawai?i Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii comprises of two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. This park is a good place to study the geological evolution of the island because it is home to some rare native flora and fauna. The main entrance to the park leads past several craters from previous eruptions and is located close to two art museums that display some of the most historic events here.

Richardson Beach Park is known snorkeling, coral reef, fish, natural seawalls (made of lava), trees, natural pools and coves. People usually flock to this place for its relative calmness and a stunning backdrop of blue waters and tropical vegetation. The best part here is a black sand beach, where the sand is black because of persistent lava that had once flown over it.
