Pechersk Lavra (Caves Monastery)

The premier attraction of Kiev, Pechersk Lavra stands on a hill overlooking the Dnieper River. The Lavra is divided into two parts - Upper Lavra and Lower Lavra. Some of the major attractions in Upper Lavra are Great Bell Tower, Church of the Assumption, Museum of Historic Treasures, and Museum of Micro-miniatures. Lower Lavra features hundreds of narrow passages and caves where monks once worshiped and lived. More than 100 of these monks lie mummified in the niches lining the subterranean streets.

St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery

Located in the city center, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery is named after the patron saint of Kiev. The monastery was originally built in the 12th century but was destroyed by the Soviets in 20th century. It was rebuilt and officially reopened in 1999. Some of the remarkable buildings here are cathedral, a refectory and a massive bell tower entrance.
